Chepstow has announced the running of a series of races over one mile this summer culminating in a final worth £30,000 on August Bank Holiday Monday.
The ten qualifiers will be run at Class 5 and 6 with the final to be a Class 2 handicap. They start at the opening flat meeting on Tuesday 14th May.
Horses that declare in any qualifier – or are entered to run if the time of abandonment was prior to the declaration stage – will be eligible to enter the final.
The elimination and balloting procedures have been modified for the purposes of the qualifiers, such that a horse will gain protection from elimination by obtaining points throughout the series.
Points will be awarded in each qualifier as follows:
- Winner-10 points,
- 2nd-8 points,
- 3rd-6 points,
- 4th-4 points,
- 5th-2 points,
- 6th-1 point.
Points will also be awarded under the Chepstow Frequent Runner Scheme.
Horses that start in three qualifiers at Chepstow during 2024 will be awarded 9 points. These 9 points will be in addition to any points that a horse may gain from the qualifying races.
The horse obtaining the highest number of points will be afforded the greatest protection from elimination. In the event of two or more horses being entered for the final with the same number of points, the horse allotted the lowest weight will be eliminated first. If two or more such horses have the same weight, their position in the elimination sequence will be allocated by random ballot.
Chepstow’s clerk of the course Dai Jones said:
”We are delighted to announce a series aimed at the grass roots of the sport with a final worth £30,000 in prize money. This series will complement the sprint and stayers’ series held at our sister racecourse, Bath, which has proved to be a great success”.
